Fruit Picking Experience!
A family from Singapore (parents in their 50s and son/daughter in their 20s) requested a fruit picking experience (with English tour).
While on the road, we discussed a lot about Japanese food and cuisine in general, and I was impressed by their depth of interests in food culture and culinary experience. On this day, our destination was “Tsukaharayama Fruit Farm Fukasawa” on top of a small hill in Yamanashi Prefecture, owned and run by a sweet couple. Since the owners only spoke in Japanese, I translated their explanation on how to grow Japanese Muscat and Asian pears into English while they enjoy the fruits of the couple’s labor, which was needless to say delicious! Perhaps it was the mutual love and respect for good fruits, but our guests and the owners became so close that the guests started calling the owners “Otto-san” and “Okka-san” (literally translated as Dad and Mom, but these terms are often used in Japan to show intimacy and friendship).
At the end of the trip, I peered through the back mirror of the car to see my guests with full smile, waving at Otto-san and Okka-san, and I felt honored to be playing a small part in their trip and helping to create a wonderful friendship and memory.
